Romans 5-8

I love the book of Romans! Most of the letters Paul wrote came after he had already visited a city. This means that the deep doctrines of the faith were communicated to those people face to face. Romans is a gift. Since Paul had yet to visit that important city, he explained in written from all of these deep spiritual truths for us all to enjoy for all time.

Overall, Romans 5-8 holds significant theological significance by addressing fundamental aspects of the Christian faith, such as salvation, justification, reconciliation, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the victorious life in Christ. It provides encouragement, assurance, and guidance for believers, shaping their understanding of God's grace, their identity in Christ, and their relationship with God and fellow believers.

“In the Scriptures the three Persons are shown to act in harmonious unity in all the mighty works that are wrought throughout the universe.” A.W. Tozer

The Father is the Planner, the Son is the Accomplisher, and the Holy Spirit is the Applier of salvation to Believers. The Father is the Source, the Son is the Means, and the Holy Spirit is the Effector of salvation—it is He who convicts, convinces, and converts. The Son is the Redeemer, yet God the Father and the Spirit are described as sending the Son to redeem. The Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier, yet the Father and Son also cooperate in this work. The Father's love and adoption, the Son's sacrifice and reconciliation, and the Holy Spirit's presence and empowerment are all intricately involved in bringing about our salvation and shaping our relationship with God. 2 Corinthians 13:14: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Chapter-by-chapter overview:

  • Romans 5:

    • Having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (5:1-2).

    • This salvation by faith brings grace and hope (5:2).

    • We exult in our tribulations as they bring perseverance, proven character, and hope (5:3-5).

    • The love of God is poured out through the Holy Spirit who was given to us (5:5).

    • While we were still helpless, Christ died for us (5:6-11).

    • We are justified by his blood and saved from the wrath of God through Him (5:9).

    • One man Adam brought death; one man Jesus Christ brought life (5:12-21).

    • The Law came in that transgressions may increase (5:20).

    • Sin reigned in death but grace reigns in righteousness through Christ (5:21).

  • Romans 6:

    • We are free from sin through the death of Christ; we are no longer slaves (6:1-7).

    • If we have died with Christ, we shall also live with Him (6:8-9).

    • He died to sin once for all; the life He lives He lives to God (6:10).

    • Consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus (6:11).

    • Do not let sin reign in your mortal body (6:12).

    • Sin is not our master; we are not under law but grace (6:14).

    • We are slaves to that which we obey: sin, resulting in death or obedience, resulting in life (6:16).

    • God freed us from our slavery to sin to become slaves of righteousness (6:17-18).

    • Living as slaves to righteousness leads to our sanctification (6:19).

    • What benefit were you gaining from sin, that you are now ashamed of, that leads to death (6:21)?

    • The benefit of being enslaved to God is sanctification and eternal life (6:22).

    • The wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (6:23).

  • Romans 7:

    • The law has jurisdiction over people as long as they live (7:1).

    • We died to the law through the body of Christ to bear fruit for God (7:2-4).

    • While we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work to product fruit for death (7:5).

    • We have now been released from the law; we died to that which we were bound; to serve in the newness of the Spirit, not the oldness of the law (7:6).

    • Is the law sin? No. It reveals sin in us. Apart from the law, sin is dead. (7:7-13) (Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly demonstrating that the law was not the problem. The problem is us breaking the law which is sin.)

    • Nothing good dwells in me—in my flesh—sin dwells in me. Even when I desire to serve the law of God, I, in my flesh, serve the law of sin (7:14-25).

  • Romans 8:

    • Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. He has set us free from the law of sin and death (7:25-8:2).

    • Jesus did for us what we could not do in the flesh (8:3-8).

    • Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. The Trinity gives life—the Spirit of the Father who raised Jesus from the dead must dwell in you (8:9-11).

    • We are no longer under obligation to the flesh but to live according to the Spirit (8:12-14).

    • We are no longer slaves but have been adopted as heirs with Christ. God is now our Father and the Spirit dwells within us (8:15-17). (Trinity).

    • Our present sufferings are not worthy to be compared to with our eternal glory. We wait eagerly for the redemption of our body (8:17-23).

    • We continue to persevere in hope (8:24-25).

    • The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness by interceding for us in prayer to the Father (8:26-27).

    • God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God (8:28).

    • Those God foreknew, He predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, He called, justified, and glorified (8:29-30).

    • If God is for us, who can be against us? He gave us Christ and will freely give us all things (8:31-33).

    • Jesus, at the right hand of the Father, also intercedes for us (8:34).

    • Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ—not tribulation, distress, persecution, etc. We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us (8:35-39)!

Chapter summaries:

  • Romans 5:

    • Peace and Justification: Paul begins by emphasizing the peace and reconciliation believers have with God through faith in Jesus Christ. He highlights that while humans were once sinners, Christ's sacrificial death on the cross justified them before God. Through Jesus, Believers receive righteousness and eternal life.

  • Romans 6:

    • Freedom from Sin: should we go on sinning that grace will about. By no means! Paul discusses the significance of baptism and its representation of dying to sin and being raised to new life in Christ. He emphasizes that Believers should no longer let sin reign over them but should present themselves as instruments of righteousness. Sin no longer has dominion over them because they are under grace.

  •  Romans 7:

    • Struggle with Sin: Paul acknowledges the ongoing struggle with sin that Believers experience, despite their new life in Christ. He describes the conflict between the desires of the flesh and the desire to do what is right. He highlights the need for deliverance and recognizes that it is through Jesus Christ that Believers can find victory over sin.

  •  Romans 8:

    • Life in the Spirit: Paul delves into the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Believers. He teaches that those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit, leading to life and peace. He contrasts this with living according to the flesh, which leads to death.

    • Adoption and Inheritance: Paul explains that Believers have been adopted as children of God and are heirs with Christ. He emphasizes that Believers share in Christ's sufferings and future glory. The Holy Spirit helps Believers in their weaknesses and intercedes for them according to God's will.

    • God's Unchanging Love: Paul expresses the unshakable love of God towards Believers, stating that nothing can separate them from the love of Christ. He assures them that God works all things together for their good, conforming them to the image of Christ.
